Things GREAT Leaders DO!
Each and everyday, I end up in a conversation on the topic of Leadership. Regardless of who it’s with, inevitably the following question pops up, “What are some things all great leaders consistently do?”
As I look back on it, I realize that when asked, I don't always give the same answer... which funny enough isn’t very consistent. (So, now I'm thinking to myself---does that make me a poor leader?) The fact is, the answers I give always vary, because of the particular person I’m speaking to, the climate of the conversation, or the fact that there are LOTS of potentially good answers.
With that in mind, and in support of all of you around the world "climbing your leadership mountain," I thought I’d share a couple of my favorite "leadership things” ---and hopefully when you're finished reading, you’ll provide a couple of yours. That way, I can work on my own leadership and fulfill one of my favorites…
#1 Never Stop Learning
John F. Kennedy once said, “Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.” Having mentors, meeting experts from a variety of industries, and reading about subjects outside of your day-to-day experience can spawn creativity and new ideas, which will also keep you fresh and better equipped to serve those you lead. Take a second and ask yourself, What’s the last "NEW THING" I learned?
Once you get in the habit of regularly learning new things, you can use the knowledge and lessons to lead people well. Another one of my favorites is incredibly important and often people "give themselves a pass" when it comes to this topic. But, there's no question you must ensure you're also...
#2 Walking Your Talk
Someone is always watching, and they want to see if you are practicing what you preach. The old phrase, “actions speak louder than words,” applies whether you are at the helm of a large company, or leading a small group.
As the CEO (Constantly Elevating Others) of Leadercast, my team and I are always under a microscope...and that's a good thing. Our clients, partners, vendors, employees, and anyone else who has in interest in what we do, are watching and have the right to know if we are leading by example.
So, in the spirit of always striving to become a #LeaderWorthFollowing…do what we do everyday. Grab a mirror, take a deep breath, and ask yourself the tough question, “are my actions congruent with my words?” If you find yourself not in alignment, don't worry...it's never too late to get on track.
Thanks for letting me share a few of my favorite “Things”… and I'd really love to know---what are some of yours?
